SPIC MACAY - NATIONAL SCHOOL INTENSIVE

The six-day cultural fiesta entitled the ‘National School Intensive 2010’, held by SPIC MACAY in association with Takshila Educational Society (TES), was inaugurated on December 25th at DPS Patna at the JW campus. 400 students from across the country participated in the program. These children spent a whole week attending cultural performances and workshops conducted by maestros, in the vast arena of Indian classical music and dance. Talks by eminent luminaries from different fields of expertise enthralled and excited the huge audience. The campus was magnificently decorated; picture profiles of the different forms of classical music and dance like Mahur (Orissa), Khayal (Rajasthan), Lama Mask dance, Kathakali (Kerala) were beautifully executed. One exhibition showed no less than 30 Indian classical musical instruments!

A Carnatic violin recital by Dr. L. Subramaniam thrilled and captivated the audience at the Inaugural ceremony. Pt. Birju Maharaj, the renowned Kathak dancer, had the audience spell-bound with his deft and graceful footwork. He is currently the leading exponent of the Lucknow Kalka Bindadin Gharana of the Kathak dance form in India. He is also the descendant of the legendary Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, including his two uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj, as also his father and guru, Acchan Maharaj.

Every morning, the participants enjoyed a three-hour session of yoga conducted by Dr. Kiran Seth. Participants sat in ’padmasan’ doing ’pranayam’, followed by a lesson in Hatha Yoga, where they learned ‘surya namaskar’. The session concluded with Nada Yoga, followed by a mass participation in  ‘shramdan’.

On the last day of the Intensive, students presented the different art forms which they had learned during the six days of the program. The participants of Khadi, Madhubani, Bawan Buti and Sujni folk-art design displayed a manifold variety of fabrics prepared exclusively by them. The Kathak, Odissi and Bharatnatyam dance Intensive group gave exquisite stage performances.  Environmental, theatrical and Koodiyattam presentations were also on display.

On conclusion of the Intensive,  participants were offered the rare opportunity sit in on  discourses by eminent personalities like Padma Vibhushan Sunder Lal Bahuguna, Rabindra Rajhans and the famous painter, Shri Shyam Sharma. Sunder Lal Bahuguna who is associated with the Chipko movement, discussed environmental issues and  regaled the children with his experiences in jail at the age of 17. Rabindra Rajhans elaborated on Ancient Classicism. Shri Shyam Sharma introduced the evolution of ‘Patna Kalam’, (the painting form that developed during British times and which was inspired by both Mughal as well as British influences), emphasizing particularly the rich art heritage of Bihar.
